Catalonia A land of geographic and cultural contrasts, situated between the Pyrenees to the north, the Mediterranean and its pre-coastal mountain ranges to the south and east, and the plains of the Ebro depression, it welcomes us with a great variety of offers of different corners and lodgings. We have selected four characteristic zones: The Empordà plain, situated between the Pyrenees, the coastal ranges and the Mediterranean sea. It is a fertile land where the cultivation of cereals and fruit trees dominates. A point of attraction for many civilisations, it reveals vestiges of Greco-Roman culture, Iberian settlements and Medieval towns and villages. There are a large number of natural parks, including that of the “Aiguamolls”, one of the most important marshy areas on the Peninsula. (Our lodging: Molí del Mig). The pre-coastal ranges of Tarragona, with El Montsant, La Mussara and the Prades range. This is a unique area with the traditional cultivations of the Mediterranean like vines, olives and very especially hazelnuts and almonds. The austere vegetation of the southern slopes contrasts with the lush woods of the countless ravines and gorges. Its historical-cultural attractiveness is highly important: the Cistercian monasteries of Poblet (World Heritage Site), Santes Creus and Vallbona that can be visited by bicycle from the hotel and naturally, Tarragona capital itself. (Our lodging: Hostal el Senglar). The coastal ranges to the south of Barcelona between the Mediterranean and the lower valley of the Llobregat. Twenty kilometres from Barcelona we find a typically Mediterranean landscape with many routes by bicycle or on foot in the immediate area and the “Alt Penedès”. It is a place of rest and pleasant temperatures all year round. We are half an hour by car from Barcelona, the beaches, the mountains and the monastery of Montserrat, the large and small wineries and cellars of El Penedès, the “land of Cava”. (Our lodging: Can Rafel). The plains of the inland depression of the counties of l’Urgell and La Segarra, bordered by the mountains of Tarragona to the south and the Pre-Pyrenees to the North. It is an unusual landscape of wheat fields, typical moors, picturesque villages and castles dating from the time of the reconquest. An ideal region for cycling along endless paths and tracks. (Our lodging: Hostal del Carme). |
